How emergency dentistry works

Most dental visits are planned, like a checkup or a cleaning. Emergency dentistry is different. It is urgent dental care for sudden problems, such as trauma, severe pain, or infection, where waiting can make things worse. At Genuine Care Dental in Saratoga, CA, we examine the problem first, work out the cause, and then explain your options in plain language.

When to see an emergency dentist

Not every dental problem is an emergency. A small chip or a dull ache can often wait a day or two. But you should seek emergency dental care for:

  • Severe or lasting toothache
  • Swelling in your face or gums, which can point to infection
  • A knocked-out or loose tooth
  • A broken or cracked tooth
  • A lost filling or crown, especially with pain
  • Bleeding that will not stop

If you are not sure, it is fine to ask us. If swelling affects your breathing or swallowing, or you have a fever, go to the emergency room.

Why acting quickly helps

Dental emergencies rarely fix themselves. A knocked-out tooth has a far better chance when it is cared for quickly, and an infection can spread if it is left alone. Prompt emergency dental care relieves pain and protects the tooth, and it often prevents a bigger repair later.

Treatments for dental emergencies

Treatment depends on the problem. After an exam and X-rays, we may:

  • Repair or replace a lost dental filling
  • Restore a broken tooth or replace a lost crown
  • Relieve infection deep in the tooth with root canal treatment
  • Remove a tooth that cannot be saved

What to do while you wait

Rinse your mouth with warm water and use a cold compress on your cheek for swelling. Save any broken pieces. For a knocked-out tooth, hold it by the crown, not the root, rinse it briefly, and keep it moist in milk. Skip chewing on the injured side. For a lost filling or crown, sugarless gum can cover the opening for a short time. Over-the-counter pain relief, taken as directed, can help. Never place aspirin on your gums.

Preventing dental emergencies

A mouth guard protects teeth during sports, and a custom night guard can help if you grind. Regular exams catch weak spots before they fail. Avoid chewing ice or opening packages with your teeth.

Comfort matters

Emergencies are stressful. We take our time, numb the area, and can talk about sedation options if you are anxious.

About Genuine Care Dental

When something goes wrong, the setting should help you breathe. We didn't want it to feel like a dental office, so we didn't build one. Warm wood, real plants, a couch you'd actually choose to sit on, and chairs picked for comfort as much as function, all so you forget where you actually are.

Dr. Rong and Mia lead the practice with an expert team who know that an urgent visit calls for patience and honest answers.

We keep comforts ready: an anxiety blanket and calming aroma, a neck pillow, lip balm, dark sunglasses, and free phone chargers, plus shows on the screens and a coffee bar for the wait afterward.

FAQs

Emergency dentist FAQs

Answers to common questions about dental emergencies, including what counts as one and what to do until you are seen.
What counts as a dental emergency?

Severe or lasting tooth pain, swelling in your face or gums, a knocked-out or loose tooth, a broken tooth, a lost filling or crown with pain, or bleeding that will not stop. If you are not sure, call us and we will help you decide.

What should I do if my tooth is knocked out?

Pick the tooth up by the crown, not the root, and gently rinse it without scrubbing. If you can, place it back in the socket, or keep it in milk. Then call us right away, because time matters.

What should I do if I chip or break a tooth?

Rinse your mouth with warm water, save any pieces, and use a cold compress on your cheek if there is swelling. Avoid chewing on that tooth and call us so we can look at it.

What can I do about a severe toothache until I am seen?

Rinse with warm salt water, gently floss to remove any trapped food, and use a cold compress on your cheek. Over-the-counter pain relief taken as directed can help. Do not place aspirin on your gums, and call us.

Is a swollen face or gum an emergency?

Yes. Swelling can point to an infection that may spread. If the swelling affects your breathing or swallowing, or you have a fever, go to the emergency room. Otherwise, call us right away.

What should I do if I lose a filling or a crown?

Keep the crown if you can and call us. For a lost crown, over-the-counter dental cement can hold it in place temporarily. Avoid chewing on that side, and do not wait, because the tooth is exposed.

Should I go to the ER or a dentist for tooth pain?

For most dental problems, a dentist can treat the cause, which an ER usually cannot. Go to the ER for facial swelling that affects breathing, a serious injury, or bleeding you cannot control.
